The Human Bean

This challenging project required coordination with both the cities of Meridian and Garden City to develop two Human Bean locations.

The Human Bean on State Street in Garden City took 1 year to approve the drive-through. The old-town designation didn’t allow for a drive-through but we demonstrated that there was precedence and were subsequently approved. It was then designed to be pedestrian friendly by adding patios, awnings, and a walk-up counter.

Meanwhile, the Meridian location required 7 months of back-and-forth planning to accomplish. In order to meet city requirements, we created a pedestrian friendly design that utilized outdoor spaces. A happy medium was reached by adding outdoor dining and patios. In addition, the City of Meridian requested a two-story building. We achieved a middle-ground compromise by making the building appear to be two stories while remaining only one story. The end result is an attractively built, live-work-play / mixed use property.
